Demi Lovato's New Admission

Demi Lovato’s Shocking New Admission — I Threw Up ‘Five Times A Day’ & ‘Was Only Eating Two Times A Week!’

April 20th, 2011

Demi opens up on her battles with food, cutting, drugs and alcohol in her new interview — and how she overcame her demons!

Demi Lovato looks healthier and happier than ever after her stint in a Chicago treatment facility, and is know finally revealing the personal battles with her weight, cutting, drugs and alcohol that sent her there. Demi tells People, “When I was about 15, I was only eating two meals a week, but I wasn’t losing any more weight because my body adjusted to that. So I tried new things: laxatives, fasts — nothing was working. I decided maybe I should start throwing up. At my worst, I was doing it five times a day. I threw up so hard and so much, it was just blood in the toilet.”

Among Demi’s other brave admissions:

* On her now infamous fight with dancer Alex Welch: “I was manic. I was hurt. I just exploded. Everything built up to this point, and I took it out on someone who was my friend.”

* On if it was her decision to seek treatment: “Yes and no. I flew back to the U.S. and I thought we were going to L.A. My parents were like, ‘No, you’re going to Dallas. We have the owner of a treatment center waiting to talk to you.’”

* On what motivated her weight loss: “The spotlight didn’t cause this. It just contributed a little bit. I looked at blogs: I saw nasty comments.”

* On how she would skip meals: “On lunch breaks on Sonny with a Chance, instead of eating, I would take naps or I’d say, ‘I’d gotta get my nails done!’ I’d also go out with my friends more than normal.”

* On drugs and alcohol: “I’d be lying if I said I never touched anything. Fortunately it never got to a place where I had to be in treatment for it.”

* On depression: “I’ve battled depression from a young age. I never found out until I went into treatment that I am bipolar.”

* On reuniting with old friends: “Selena [Gomez] and I reconnected the first week. We hadn’t spoken in a long time. I take the blame; I feel like it was because of the way I’d been acting. She called me and she was the one crying.”

* On her current eating habits: “My goal for every day is to eat three meals, and that’s challenging enough.”

* On returning to Sonny with a Chance: “I don’t know if I could handle being in front of a camera with my body right now.”

* On staying strong: ”It’s a struggle I’ll probably have to deal with for the rest of my life. But I have so much life to live; I don’t want to waste it.

Demi is one brave young woman who is helping millions of girls by making her struggles, and hard work in overcoming them, public!

SOURCE

Demi Lovato Talks About Friendship

Choose Your Friends Wisely

Seventeen contributing editor Demi Lovato talks about how much toxic friends can influence and define you—and why she’s only surrounding herself with positive people now.

By Demi Lovato

It’s really important to be aware of the people who you’re hanging out with—the people who you surround yourself with—when you’re at an age where you’re trying to figure out who you are. I think a lot of us subconsciously rely on our peers and our friends to tell us exactly who we are, because we really don’t know ourselves. So when we’re growing up, it’s a really tricky time, and we have to make sure that the people that we’re hanging out with are a positive influence on us.

We don’t realize it, but we do look to our friends for fashion advice, and to help make decisions that will affect our futures. It’s really important to remember that you are who your friends are, so if you’re hanging around a bad crowd, people will perceive you as part of that crowd.

The kinds of people that I’m surrounding myself with now are people who are beneficial not only to my recovery but also to the lifestyle that I want to have, which is peaceful and serene. I look for people who I can hang out with without relying on bad habits to have fun—people who I can go bowling with, or literally just watch TV and knit with, people who love me for me and don’t care if I’m tall or short, fat or thin. My friends today love me for me—they’re people who I can act like myself around.

Stay Strong,

SOURCE

By Sharon Cotliar

Wednesday April 20, 2011 04:00 PM EDT

Three months after leaving a residential treatment center, teen star Demi Lovato is bravely opening up about her private struggles – not only with anorexia and bulimia, but also with bipolar disorder.

“I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar,” Lovato told PEOPLE in a candid interview that took place last month in her L.A.-area home.

But during her three-month stay at a treatment center where she underwent therapy for anorexia, bulimia and cutting, Lovato, 18, who said she’s “battled depression from a very young age,” discovered why she was having trouble controlling her emotions and actions.

“Looking back it makes sense,” she says of her diagnosis. “There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I’d be up until 5:30 in the morning.”

“I feel like I am in control now where my whole life I wasn’t in control,” she adds.

The new revelation explains why when actress Catherine Zeta-Jones announced that she has bipolar II disorder, Lovato was quick to Tweet her support.

Now Lovato is taking the same brave step while discussing the “darkest time” in her life. “What’s important for me now,” she says, “is to help others.”

For more about Lovato’s fight to get healthy, her time in treatment and how she repaired her relationship with best friend Selena Gomez, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE.

Demi Lovato Is Leaving Sonny with a Chance

By Sharon Cotliar

Tuesday April 19, 2011 11:00 AM EDT

Demi Lovato in Santa Monica, Calif., on Jan. 28

Demi Lovato is taking a chance.

The teen star – who entered treatment for “physical and emotional issues” last October – will not be returning to her hit Disney Channel series, Sonny with a Chance.

“It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music,” Lovato, 18, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on.”

“I don’t think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery,” says Lovato, who returned to Los Angeles in January after completing three months of in-patient treatment. “Being in front of a camera would make me nervous.”

And she has the support of the Disney Channel.

“We respect Demi’s decision to focus fulltime on her music and not immediately return to her acting career,” a rep for the Disney Channel said in a statement. “She is a talented young woman and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity.”

Lovato’s career took off after starring in the Disney Channel’s 2008 original movie Camp Rock, opposite the Jonas Brothers. Next came Sonny with a Chance, which debuted in 2010.

But even without its main star, the show will still go on: the series is being reinvented as a sketch comedy program called So Random!, which will debut in June.

Lovato, who will continue to record under Disney’s label Hollywood Records, calls her decision to walk away from her TV gig “nerve-racking.” But, she says, “I’m really excited to see where everything goes.”

To learn more about Demi Lovato’s struggle with eating disorders, what her life was like in treatment and all about her life now, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE on newsstands Friday.

SOURCE

More details on Demi Lovato's 20/20 Interview!

She’s the best friend a generation has grown up with — 18-year-old Demi Lovato is the Disney darling with the winning smile. She sang her way to the top of the pop charts and heights of wholesome teen icon status.

Yet Lovato’s natural outward confidence in front of the camera could not protect her from the inner, lasting effects of childhood bullying. She sat down with ABC News’ Robin Roberts to share her story of a lifetime of struggles.

“I’ve spoken openly about being bullied throughout the past few years, but one thing that I’ve never been able to feel comfortable talking about was the effects that it had on my life, afterwards,” she said. “I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me. And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.”

Her torment turned into a dangerous habit.

“I developed an eating disorder, and that’s kind of what I’ve been dealing with ever since,” she said.

Lovato began a lifelong struggle with bulimia and alternately, severely restricting her eating.

“I was compulsively overeating when I was eight years old,” she said. “So, I guess, for the past 10 years I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food.”

Her family helped her find professional help for her food issues. But there was a secret battle she fought alone, something she desperately hid from everyone: At age 11, Lovato began cutting herself — intentionally self-mutilating her wrists as a way of coping with emotions.

“It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body,” she told Roberts. “I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn’t know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself.”

It was a dangerous coping mechanism that continued throughout her teen years. Last summer, it all came to a boiling point during her concert tour with the Jonas Brothers for the musical, “Camp Rock 2.”

“I was performing concerts on an empty stomach,” she said. “I was losing my voice from purging. I was self-medicating. I was not taking medication for depression, and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me.

Demi Lovato Takes ’100 Percent, Full Responsibility’

Lovato admitted to physically striking one of her backup dancers, Alex Welch, during the South American leg of their international tour.

“I take 100 percent, full responsibility.” Lovato told Roberts. “I feel horrible. [She] was my friend.”

Lovato’s family and management team held an intervention.

“They sat me down and said, ‘You can’t live like this,’” Lovato said.

She immediately quit the tour and checked in to Timberline Knolls — a residential treatment center in Illinois for women battling addiction and disorder.

While in treatment, Lovato learned to alter her coping skills and found better ways to deal with her emotions.

“For the first time in my life, I started to feel,” she said.

During the tough times in treatment, Lovato says it was the thought of her younger sister, Madison, who plays Juanita Solis, the daughter of Gabrielle on “Desperate Housewives,” that got her through her darkest hours.

“A picture of my little sister, on my little bulletin board, was one of the main things that kept me going,” she said. “I just kept thinking, ‘OK, set this example for your little sister.’”

Lovato wanted to set an example — not only for Madison, but for all the other women fighting the same issues.

“The real reason why I’m sitting down with you,” she said, “is to open up the eyes of so many young girls, that it doesn’t have to be this way.”

Teen singer and actress Demi Lovato sat down with ABC News for her first television interview since leaving treatment for cutting and eating disorders. Watch Lovato share her story with Robin Roberts Friday at 10 p.m. on “20/20″ and on “Good Morning America.”

SOURCE

Seventeen Magazine: Demi Lovato

For the first time since entering rehab last fall, Demi Lovato is opening up about the problems that led her to seek treatment in the first place.

The Disney starlet, whose rep had previously said she was getting help for “emotional and physical issues,” revealed in the May issue of Seventeen that she had been struggling with cutting, an eating disorder and depression for years.

But Lovato’s troubles came to a head in October, when she punched Alex Welch, a dancer on her international tour with the Jonas Brothers.

“Lashing out was my cry for help,” the 18-year-old told Seventeen. “Wow, who was I to do that? I’m very ashamed. I wasn’t in the right state of mind at all.”

Lovato “basically had a nervous breakdown,” she said.

“I was really bad off,” she admitted. “My parents and my manager pulled me aside and said, ‘You need to get some help.’”

“It was an intervention,” she continued. “I wanted freedom from the inner demons. I wanted to start my life over.”

Many of Lovato’s insecurities had been worsened by her desire to exceed expectations. She told the magazine she once passed out backstage during a concert, but continued to perform after regaining consciousness.

“I didn’t want anyone to be able to say that there was someone else working harder than I was,” she said.

And, in perhaps a vague reference to her failed romance with Joe Jonas, Lovato said she didn’t feel she deserved “to be loved by someone.”

“You aren’t worthy enough,” she would tell herself.

Lovato also went to great lengths to keep her problems a secret.

“There were times when I thought, I don’t know if I actually want help because my eating disorders are my best friend,” she recalled. “Looking back on it, I just want to cradle my old self up and hold her and tell her that it doesn’t have to be this way.”

Intense counseling in rehab helped Lovato look at herself differently.

“One of the reasons I was so unhappy for years was because I never embraced my emotions and I was trying to stay in control,” she explained. “In treatment, all of the negative things I did were stripped away and I had to start processing my feelings.”

In addition to channeling her thoughts into creative outlets like painting and knitting, Lovato also spent her time in rehab rebuilding her friendship with fellow Disney star Selena Gomez, with whom she spoke to each week.

“We didn’t really discuss what I was going through — we just talked,” Lovato said.

The “Sonny with a Chance” star, who completed in-patient treatment in January, now wants to use her experiences to help her fans who might be suffering from similar problems.

In a video message released in early March, Lovato credited her fan base for helping her get through “the darkest time in my life.”

Through a new project with Seventeen and The Jed Foundation called “Love is Louder Than the Pressure to be Perfect,” she will return the favor.

Lovato will take on the role of a Seventeen contributing editor, posting twice monthly at seventeen.com/demilovato and helping to address teen issues in the magazine.

“I’m so excited to be working with Seventeen and The Jed Foundation to help other teens talk about and cope with the problems we all face,” she said. “My fans have been such an incredible support system for me — I hope I can repay this and help other girls learn from my experiences.”

SOURCE
